Welcome to the GPA/Stakeholder Forum website!
The purpose of this website is to provide a resource for stakeholders about the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA) and the UNEP/GPA Coordination Office’s activities in implementing the outcomes of the Second Intergovernmental Review Meeting (IGR-2), which took place in Beijing, China, from 16-20 October 2006. The Beijing Declaration that was adopted at the meeting marks a new direction in the implementation of the GPA, with greater emphasis on national and local-level action supported by a call for creating sustainable financial mechanisms, economic valuation of goods and services provided by oceans and integrated approaches, in particular approaches linking freshwater and coastal management. This new focus reinforces the vital role stakeholders have to play in developing solutions to prevent the degradation of the marine environment from land-based activities. It also opens the door to a wide range of opportunities for stakeholders to contribute to the implementation of the GPA in the running up to the Third Intergovernmental Review Meeting, tentatively scheduled to take place in 2011. We look forward to your active involvement in the implementation of the outcomes of the IGR-2 and hope this website will provide you with all the necessary information to make this happen.
GPA Outreach
The first edition of the GPA Outreach will be available in June 2008 and will focus on the outcomes of the Fourth Global Oceans Conference, which was held in Hanoi, Viet Nam, from 8-11 April 2008.
Stakeholder Forum will also publish a special edition of the GPA Outreach for the World Water Week, which is scheduled to take place in Stockholm, Sweden, from 17-23 August 2008. The theme of the week is “Progress and Prospects on Water: For a Clean and Healthy World,” including a Special Focus on Sanitation.
The GPA Outreach is a newsletter for stakeholders launched in 2006, in the running up to the IGR-2, and which aimed to provide a resource for stakeholders about the GPA and IGR-2 in order for them to make informed inputs into the meeting, including through regional preparatory events and multi-stakeholder dialogues at the IGR-2 (GPA Outreach archives).
With the support of the UNEP/GPA Coordination Office, this publication is now being re-launched and will be issued on a quarterly basis.
