Stakeholder Forum was the first National Committee for UNEP set up in 1987 when the secretariat was housed by IIED. In 1990 the UK Government contracted what was then known as UNED-UK to act as the coordinator for the UK stakeholders for the Rio Earth Summit.

In 1994 the UK hosted World Environment Day and what had become UNED-UK organized a number of events including a conference on Values for Sustainable Development and a competition with WWF for school children to envision what the world would be like in 2012.

UNED-UK organized activities for UNEP in the UK from then to 2000 this included stakeholder input to UNEPs Governing Council.

In 2000 when UNED-UK Became Stakeholder Forum it negotiated a worldwide Memorandum of Understanding with UNEP to outreach to stakeholders worldwide in preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. The funds for this MOU were from governments and the United Nations Foundation.

Stakeholder Forum has coordinated for UNEP the launches of GEO2, GEO3 and GEO4 in the UK in each case making the national TV and Radio News.

Stakeholder Forum has continued to coordinate stakeholders in UNEP Governing Council and the preparatory meetings for the European Region. It has twice been selected to represent the European Region’s stakeholders at UNEP GC.

In 2007 Stakeholder Forum set up a new multistakeholder Policy Advisory Panel to advice on work around UNEP and the UN CSD.
